Ometepe island and its two volcanoes over the lake, Nicaragua

Land

Between Two Volcanoes

Ometepe lies in Lake Nicaragua.

Volcanic slopes, cloud forest and surrounding water define the island's landscape.

Two volcanoes, one island

Ometepe rises from Lake Nicaragua around two volcanoes: Concepción, which remains active, and Maderas, beneath its cloud forest. A narrow strip of fertile land joins them, with lake water surrounding both volcanic peaks.

A biosphere island

Ometepe was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2010.

Sharks in Lake Nicaragua

Lake Nicaragua is one of the few freshwater lakes in the world known for sharks.

For years, their presence seemed inexplicable. It was later understood that they move between the Caribbean Sea and the lake through the San Juan River.

The pause between rains

Nicaragua knows two principal seasons — one of rain, one of sun.

But during the wet season, the rain may pause for a time. It is known as the veranillo — the little summer.

Even after dark

After sunset, warm air and humidity can remain over Ometepe.

The volcanoes darken against the lake as daylight fades.
